Friends of the Oakland Public School Libraries
New Wordpress Site for Non-profit

Friends of the Oakland Public School Libraries (FOPSL) is a non-profit working to support and expand Oakland's school libraries. They wanted a new Wordpress site with a more modern design, mobile support, and a more flexible editing system. I developed the site on a cloud-based LAMP server, designed the custom theme, and added a number of custom php functions and customized plugins. The site was built to allow for extensive editing with the Elementor Page Builder. Once completed, the site and domain were migrated to a managed wordpress host.

The Marine Mammal Center
Developed iOS kiosk app for non-profit

The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) is a California non-profit which rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured marine mammals, and provides education about marine mammals and their conservation. TMMC’s visitor center has an ipad kiosk that was being used to show a web page with newsletter information to visitors. They wanted a custom iOS app to provide information about donating to the center as well as newsletter sign up. The app needed to be compatible with a range of ipad models and resolutions as the center has several ipads which they bring to events. I worked with TMMC’s Guest Experience Manager to develop a scope and timetable for the project. I coded the project using Apple Swift 2.2 and also wrote several php scripts to integrate the app with TMMC’s content management system-based website.

Prison Law Office
Improved Wordpress Site for Non-profit

Prison Law Office is a non-profit that provides free legal advice and support to prisoners, with a focus on California prisons. They wanted to fix menu bugs on their Wordpress site, and improve the usability and navigability of the site's galleries and case listings. I modified the existing wordpress theme, incorporating new free plugins, custom php code, and custom Advanced Custom Fields.

Cornerstone Theater Company
Extended Wordpress site for non-profit

Cornerstone Theater is a non-profit theater company that stages productions in collaboration with locals about local issues across California and the United States. They had an existing Wordpress site with a custom theme and several customized plugins. They wanted to modify the existing fixed-width site to support mobile devices. I mirrored the existing site on a new cloud-based LAMP server, added mobile-focused styles and scripts, and modified existing php and javascript scripts to work with the new mobile layouts. The modifications were tested to make sure that the desktop experience was unchanged.

Green Streets Initiative
Existing Drupal 6 site for a non-profit

Green Streets Initiative is a non-profit that organized walk-to-work days and encourages green commuting options in Massachusetts. They had an existing Drupal 6 site, a CiviCRM installation, and a ruby-based tool to generate graphs. I made routine security and functionality updates to the installations, troubleshot problems with the setup, and made occasional layout and interface changes to meet the organization's changing needs.

Southern Oregon Permaculture Institute
New Blogger site for a non-profit

Southern Oregon Permaculture Institute is a non-profit that provides a range of Permaculture education programs and classes. They had two sites that were difficult to update and incomplete, and wanted a simple site that was easy to update. Staff had experience using Blogger, and chose this system over CMS alternatives.

RI School of the Future
New Wordpress theme for a non-profit

Rhode Island Students of the Future is a non-profit that organizes Lego robotics workshops and competitions for youth. They had an outdated site that was difficult to edit. They wanted to move to a content management system-based site with mobile compatibility. An company that provides hosting for RI businesses was selected to develop the backend and I developed a custom theme.The theme was initially developed for Wordpress, and later modified to work with Typo3.

Spelt: A Word Game
Original Game for iOS and Android

Spelt is a word game for mobile devices similar to Boggle. I had coded web-based Flash Actionscript 3 games for several years, and taught game development using Actionscript for 1 year. I applied this experience in the design and coding of a mobile game using Adobe Air. The program makes use of object-oriented programming. A custom php and mySQL driven site is used to record player scores.

Urban Greens
New Drupal 7 site for a cooperative

Urban Greens is a member-owned cooperative in Providence, Rhode Island. They have operated a natural foods buying club for 10 years, and are currently working to open a cooperative grocery store. Their previous site did not focus on the grocery store project, had outdated design and branding, and was difficult for members to edit.
I worked with their board of directors to identify stakeholders, detail user needs and goals, and establish a development schedule. Drupal 7 was selected as the content management system. I developed a custom theme and coordinated with graphic designers for hand-drawn interface elements.

Recycle-a-bike
Wordpress Site Maintenance

Recycle-a-Bike is a non-profit focused on bicycle repair and education in Rhode Island. RAB had a Wordpress site developed by recent RISD graduates. The organization was satisfied with the existing design, but wanted more mobile compatibility and additional features. I modified the existing theme to work for mobile devices and extended the site's functionality with customized wordpress plugins. I also provided regular updates and troubleshooting.
